A jam-packed, exhausting, eye-opening, fun-filled 7 days in Tokyo! Arlo and Lucy had a wonderful time observing the differences, taking in the sights, trying the food, riding the trains. Tokyo packs a punch, and we’ll be back for sure! Just need to rest our legs a bit first. 🗼⛩️🍙🚅
View fullsize
It's the trip we've been waiting for, and Arlo is ready!
View fullsize
Enjoying Hagen-Daaz ice cream in the lounge. Turns out kids under 6 can get in for free (with a gold card holder).
View fullsize
Arlo and Lucy get to take the new underground shuttle to the satellite terminal for the first time.
View fullsize
At the airport, we ran into Arlo & Lucy's friends, Brooklyn & Boss, who were also off to Japan.
View fullsize
Settled into the flight nicely (although we managed to get the only window seats without a window).
View fullsize
This peaceful image lasted for about 3 minutes.
View fullsize
Lucy proudly didn't sleep a wink on the flight, and was thrilled to receive this 3am breakfast.
View fullsize
Got our luggage, got our children; and waiting for the Keikyu Express into the city!
View fullsize
Lucy loves to hold onto the handles!
View fullsize
No wasted opportunities collecting the Eki stamps.
View fullsize
Pointing out where we just came from.
View fullsize
And we emerge in down town Tokyo (Kuramae)! Blue skies, and beautiful Japanese buildings.
View fullsize
First stop: breakfast from 7-Eleven.
View fullsize
And then we stumbled upon this view.
View fullsize
Tokyo, we made it!
View fullsize
Our first stop of the morning is Senso-ji Temple.
View fullsize
And that seems to also be the case for everyone else in Tokyo today.
View fullsize
Everyone else was touching the lantern, so Lucy had to, too.
View fullsize
Arlo really wanted to get a fortune.
View fullsize
He got the best one!
View fullsize
Our first giant koi spotting. They were hungry!
View fullsize
Lucy waiting patiently, while Mum & Arlo got the commemorative calligraphy in the stamp books.
View fullsize
Wafting the incense (as observed).
View fullsize
Continuing on to the shopping galleries behind Senso-ji.
View fullsize
Don-don-don quijote! With the same catchy music as in Bangkok.
View fullsize
Arlo was enthralled by this street performer.
View fullsize
So many bikes!
View fullsize
Continuing through Kappabashi.
View fullsize
Stopping at a tiny park for a swing, and a bite to eat.
View fullsize
And finally to our AirBnB!
View fullsize
The tatami room, which proved to be a great play space...
View fullsize
... and the bedroom for Mum & Lucy.
View fullsize
View out the (little) balcony.
View fullsize
There was a nice playground only ~3 minutes away (which Lucy spotted through an alley).
View fullsize
And dinner from our (soon to be) go-to grocery store, after a very long first day.
View fullsize
Night night from down here!
View fullsize
Good morning! Seems like someone slept well!
View fullsize
Very well-rested, refreshed, and ready for another (much cooler) day!
View fullsize
An emerging fascination with manhole covers.
View fullsize
And this one can spot a slide from a mile away.
View fullsize
A refreshing morning walk, and our destination is there in the background.
View fullsize
Walking along the scenic Sumida river.
View fullsize
Getting closer!
View fullsize
So many funny, different vehicles here!
View fullsize
Almost there!
View fullsize
We made it! Tokyo Sky Tree!
View fullsize
What's this? A glass floor!?
View fullsize
Say "cheezu!"
View fullsize
Next stop: Sumida aquarium, at the base of Tokyo Sky Tree.
View fullsize
It's not a big aquarium at all, but very beautifully curated.
View fullsize
The jellyfish exhibits were stunning.
View fullsize
Giant sting ray...
View fullsize
... and daddy shark!
View fullsize
Taking attendance. Making sure all the penguins are there (by name).
View fullsize
Arlo was really fascinated by these cute little garden eels.
View fullsize
And Lucy liked this giant guy (who's not a puffer, but looks like he should be).
View fullsize
These jellies are only 2-3 days old!
View fullsize
Lunch time, at the food court in the Skytree mall.
View fullsize
Yummy tempura, udon, and soba.
View fullsize
And we stumbled upon an official Tomica store!
View fullsize
Can't leave empty-handed. (Actually, the prices were really good!)
View fullsize
Really happy with his new Isuzu dump truck.
View fullsize
Comparing vehicles.
View fullsize
Now walking along the JR Chuo line.
View fullsize
Our first vending machine encounter.
View fullsize
Lucy spotted another fun playground.
View fullsize
This one had a great, fast (staticky) slide.
View fullsize
And some good climbing equipment.
View fullsize
This is a 5-star ramen restaurant! The line never got shorter.
View fullsize
Made it to Akihabara, for the Sunday walking street.
View fullsize
Chaotic and windy, but a great opportunity to stroll down the middle of the road!
View fullsize
Abbey Lane vibes?
View fullsize
A common, but still funny, site!
View fullsize
Old amidst new.
View fullsize
Exhausted by dinnertime for a second night in the row.
View fullsize
Up early, and ready for another exciting day.
View fullsize
But not without some tatami tumbling first.
View fullsize
Today is Monday, and so it's our first rush hour experience.
View fullsize
Really cute Toei trains for sale in the station.
View fullsize
We've come to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Complex, but it's not open yet...
View fullsize
... so we've come to this awesome playground next door first.
View fullsize
The have the widest slide I've ever seen.
View fullsize
Similar to slides in Taipei, it's made of polished concrete. And it's very fast!
View fullsize
Lots of ninja obstacles.
View fullsize
And a very neat-looking, but extremely slow, slide.
View fullsize
Here, Arlo is smiling... and stuck.
View fullsize
Riding another airplane. The flight the other evening was not enough.
View fullsize
Two monkeys.
View fullsize
Heading back to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building now.
View fullsize
Nice views from up here, too!
View fullsize
Back on the train (this time after rush hour).
View fullsize
Quick nourishment break (but so much single-use packaging!)
View fullsize
Dad's herculean effort pushing Arlo in the stroller up this hill.
View fullsize
Here we are! The Tokyo Toy Museum!
View fullsize
We ended up spending almost 4 hours here!
View fullsize
Playing alongside school groups.
View fullsize
Arlo really liked this game. (We ordered it once we got home.)
View fullsize
Recognize this cactus?
View fullsize
Toys for all ages (and foot sizes)!
View fullsize
A soroban play area.
View fullsize
Move the abacus around inside the giant vat of beads, and see how many you can pick up.
View fullsize
Lucy knows to roll the die, and match the color.
View fullsize
Playing magnetic football. They both got it.
View fullsize
Even the construction site next door was interesting.
View fullsize
Lunch break in the school yard.
View fullsize
And then back to play with more toys - including the classics.
View fullsize
Gathering mushrooms.
View fullsize
That was a fun afternoon!
View fullsize
Too tired to stay awake for the interesting manhole covers.
View fullsize
We made it, by foot, to Meiji Jingu.
View fullsize
Coming from the back entrance, you walk through absolutely enormous trees.
View fullsize
Lucy was awake for it, but someone else wasn't.
View fullsize
Lucy knows the drill before entering the shrine.
View fullsize
What's he doing?
View fullsize
Someone's awake now, but not in the mood for photos.
View fullsize
We're in the neighborhood, so we might as well check out Takeshita Street in Harajuku!
View fullsize
It's famous for its crepes, so we'd better try the crepes.
View fullsize
These go-karts (on the main roads) seem to be a new tourist fad.
View fullsize
Stumbled upon the Yamanote line!
View fullsize
And back at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building for its evening light show.
View fullsize
What a spectacular show!
View fullsize
Someone doesn't know how to control her voice indoors. (Or, more likely, chooses not to.)
View fullsize
Another dinner after an exhausting 22k-step day.
View fullsize
Today's the day Arlo's been waiting for!
View fullsize
We're heading to Tokyo Station...
View fullsize
... to buy our Shinkansen tickets!
View fullsize
And we're ready to go!
View fullsize
To say that someone is excited would be an understatement.
View fullsize
And we're off to Odawara.
View fullsize
Here we are thanks to our N700, Kodama service.
View fullsize
Hanging back in the station to wait for the next Shinkansen to shoot through.
View fullsize
Nose!
View fullsize
Lots of cool manhole covers in Odawara, too!
View fullsize
Our first stop (accidental) is a Ninja experience.
View fullsize
The ninjas played a big part in the history of Odawara; and here, we had a chance to test our ninja skills.
View fullsize
Arlo found a sword hidden below the floor boards.
View fullsize
Carefully trying to slide along a wall.
View fullsize
Hiding - pretty subtly, I must say.
View fullsize
And now, onto the castle.
View fullsize
Here's how the castle would have been constructed.
View fullsize
These two were still in Ninja mode, and looking for places to hide.
View fullsize
Made it to Odawara Castle.
View fullsize
Nice view from the top, and only a few stairs to get here.
View fullsize
Enjoying a well-earned ice cream. (Or is it lunch?)
View fullsize
Lucy spotted this cone from all the way at the top of the castle.
View fullsize
Heading back to Tokyo.
View fullsize
Posing with our train.
View fullsize
A few tracks over, Arlo spots the real Sinkansen of his dreams.
View fullsize
A clear shot of the E5, in all its green glory.
View fullsize
Heading home on everyone's favorite Yamanote Line.
View fullsize
Stopping at Ueno Park. We thought we might do the pedal boats, but the entire pond is a massive lotus garden right now.
View fullsize
On the way home, stopping at this park we'd spotted a few days earlier.
View fullsize
The roller slide was a big hit!
View fullsize
The diameter of these rollers is much smaller than the one we tried in Taipei. I think that helps.
View fullsize
As if we hadn't ridden enough Shinkansen yet today!
View fullsize
And the funny 3-way slide (banana slide?!) that we'd seen from the street.
View fullsize
Vegan ramen for dinner.
View fullsize
They have really great children's programming on TV at dinner time (smart!). Lucy loved dancing along.
View fullsize
It's never too young to start learning about flow charts!
View fullsize
Today, we're heading to Odaba.
View fullsize
Look at all these school kids walking to school by themselves.
View fullsize
Here we are, on the Yurikamome, heading out to Odaiba.
View fullsize
Crossing the Rainbow Bridge.
View fullsize
And walking to our first destination.
View fullsize
Lucky that this fire truck was here to give a fire safety training session to the business next door.
View fullsize
Our first stop: Small Worlds miniatures museum.
View fullsize
It's one of the largest miniatures museums in Asia, apparently.
View fullsize
Watching a space shuttle take off.
View fullsize
The exhibits were interactive; pushing buttons triggered trains to drive, lights to turn on, things to move.
View fullsize
But the clear highlight was...
View fullsize
... an operational replica of Kansai International Airport!
View fullsize
It cycled through days (daylight, sunset, night time, sunrise).
View fullsize
With planes taking off and landing throughout.
View fullsize
A night time departure.
View fullsize
And a Qatar flight landing.
View fullsize
In the workshop, a technician is fixing a broken finnair aircraft.
View fullsize
Interesting place to visit once.
View fullsize
Enjoying a small playground while Dad goes to find lunch.
View fullsize
Next stop, the Tokyo Water Science Museum.
View fullsize
This museum - run by the Bureau of Waterworks - was perfect for their age.
View fullsize
Watching fish swim by.
View fullsize
Making water tornadoes.
View fullsize
And standing in a giant bubble.
View fullsize
Learning about how water makes up plants and animals...
View fullsize
... and how water gets in, and out, of our bodies.
View fullsize
Installing some water pipes.
View fullsize
It's turned into a stormy day in Tokyo Bay. Better hurry back to the train!
View fullsize
Stopping at Hakuhinkan Toy Park on the way home; Arlo woke up just in time!
View fullsize
The Shinkansen train that he'd like to buy.
View fullsize
Nissan concept car on display in Ginza.
View fullsize
Udon & tempura for dinner from the grocery store.
View fullsize
And more wonderful dinnertime programming.
View fullsize
Tonight, the flow chart is about monkeys picking fleas.
View fullsize
It's a beautiful day to head back across town and check out Shibuya.
View fullsize
First stop: Hachiko -- and Arlo had the shirt to match.
View fullsize
Next, the stamp.
View fullsize
And then, the scramble.
View fullsize
Looking at the scramble from above.
View fullsize
Then, our favorite shop: Hands.
View fullsize
How do you like your eggs?
View fullsize
Lucy enjoyed the shopping!
View fullsize
Delicious ramen for lunch.
View fullsize
A kids' set for these two...
View fullsize
... and a few delicious vegan options for the adults.
View fullsize
And then we hopped into Mika Otake's car!
View fullsize
And these two were asleep in a flash!
View fullsize
Playing in an art exhibit at Tokyo Midtown.
View fullsize
Finally meeting Mika after all these years.
View fullsize
Good thing all the Mikas got the t-shirt memo!
View fullsize
Last stop for the day: TeamLab Borderless.
View fullsize
It's an interactive art x science x technology exhibit.
View fullsize
Checking out their tummies.
View fullsize
Going for a slide.
View fullsize
Walking through fields of light.
View fullsize
When you catch the birds, they turn into flowers.
View fullsize
This room was filled with orbs running along tracks. Very neat.
View fullsize
If you have enough patience, you can create a fish, and it will join in the swim.
View fullsize
Fortunate that we were able to secure tickets! They sell out weeks in advance.
View fullsize
Great view of Tokyo Tower on our way home.
View fullsize
Stopping back at the toy store, this time with passports in hand, to buy the Shinkansen.
View fullsize
Arlo was thrilled!
View fullsize
He wasted no time drawing his and Lucy's together.
View fullsize
How convenient that they fit perfectly inside the sliding door track!
View fullsize
Matching the E5 with the one on his sweatshirt.
View fullsize
Well, that's one way to sleep!
View fullsize
It's time to check out of our AirBnB! Lucy's helping to chug all the Yakult in the fridge.
View fullsize
Heading down to Yokohama for the day.
View fullsize
Leaving our bags (and sweaters, boo) in a coin locker...
View fullsize
... and heading out to explore.
View fullsize
First stop, the Nissan Gallery, in their global HQ.
View fullsize
All the latest cars on display, in a huge showroom.
View fullsize
And some classics, too.
View fullsize
Can't get enough of these boxy Japanese cars.
View fullsize
This one is cute, too!
View fullsize
Next stop is the small transport museum in the headquarters of the Keikyu Corporation.
View fullsize
Stand back, everyone! Arlo's driving the bus!
View fullsize
Stopping at another playground: this might be the smallest one yet.
View fullsize
Trying their mouthes at a drinking fountain.
View fullsize
Good thing we brought a spare shirt, Lucy!
View fullsize
Yokohama Cosmoworld!
View fullsize
Of course, stopping to ride the ferris wheel.
View fullsize
There goes Diving Coaster: Vanish!
View fullsize
Spotted a duck boat (actually, they called it a duck bus) coming out from the water.
View fullsize
We're almost at the top of the 112.5 meter wheel -- formerly the world's tallest.
View fullsize
Tempted to visit, but decided to skip it.
View fullsize
Yokohama Red Brick Warehouse, fixed up and filled with neat shops and restaurants now.
View fullsize
Actually, the whole waterfront is very nicely done.
View fullsize
I guess it's a deep sleep... on his side!
View fullsize
And here we are in Yokohama Chinatown, Japan's largest Chinatown.
View fullsize
Again, Arlo woke up just in time.
View fullsize
A neat dragon made of lanterns overhead.
View fullsize
Lucy kind of got the manhole cover plot... but not quite.
View fullsize
Despite it being a brisk, overcast day, and we left our sweaters in the locker... these two still wanted ice cream!
View fullsize
This one is a nicer one!
View fullsize
Finally learning to share the stroller... on Day 7.
View fullsize
Our last Japan sun is gone. Time to start making our way back to Haneda.
View fullsize
Taking the subway back to Yokohama Station. This is the last stop on the Minatomirai line.
View fullsize
Stumbled upon a plant-based curry restaurant in the station. The last supper!
View fullsize
And heading straight from Yokohama to Haneda.
View fullsize
I think Japan's had enough of us.
View fullsize
We've got hours to kill. Thankfully Haneda Airport -- land side -- is an attraction in itself!
View fullsize
Hey! Who knew Hakuhinkan Toy Shop had a Haneda branch, too! We could've just come here!
View fullsize
Enthralled by the ops video.
View fullsize
So tired, but can't sleep.
View fullsize
Getting their last drops of energy out in this kids play area airside.
View fullsize
Arlo hoarded all the play pieces (including logs and a tree) to make a Shinkansen...
View fullsize
... and then rounded up all the other midnight travelers to ride with him.
View fullsize
This pretty much sums up our flight back. (In that same windowless row 35!)
View fullsize
And the final leg of the journey! Thanks for traveling with us!
