A fun weekend with the whole cast of characters, in Trad.
View fullsize
On our way to Trad, stopping at our favorite green lunch spot.
View fullsize
Mum and Dad's riverside hotel in Trad, with artistically-folded towels.
View fullsize
The view from their balcony.
View fullsize
All dressed and ready for an afternoon on the town.
View fullsize
Namwan is curious to meet the new foreigner in her home.
View fullsize
Lots of attention being paid to the new person. Or is it the food.
View fullsize
Hybrid family portrait.
View fullsize
Marouy ignores his new best friend.
View fullsize
Dad inspects Top's fancy creation.
View fullsize
They're speechless.
View fullsize
Some local ants have made giant nests in one of the trees.
View fullsize
Going for a late afternoon walk around the older parts of downtown Trad.
View fullsize
One of Trad's original houses?
View fullsize
Almost a perfect reflection in the canal that cuts through town.
View fullsize
Can they pass as locals?
View fullsize
There were lots of beds and breakfast in this area.
View fullsize
This building is leftover from when the French were in town.
View fullsize
Time for a late-afternoom romp in the shady house.
View fullsize
Dinner at Seafood Restaurant #1 of many.
View fullsize
The next morning, the kids take shelter under the table from the morning sun.
View fullsize
Namwan still blends in well with her bed.
View fullsize
Some beautiful orchids at the house.
View fullsize
Marouy doesn't yet know what's in store for him today... but he can already tell that something is amiss!
View fullsize
Holding on, as I go for my inaugural ride in the back of a pickup.
View fullsize
Namwan feels safe in mom's arms.
View fullsize
"Uh oh. Where are we going?"
View fullsize
Minor issue: dead battery in the rental car. Good thing the stars aligned and we were able to replace it.
View fullsize
Luckily for him, the Hot Dog had a travel bowl at his disposal.
View fullsize
At the fruit farm, mum wonders again about the appeal of the durian.
View fullsize
She's convinced that the underside of a mangosteen would make a good stamp.
View fullsize
Posing with the mangosteen trees.
View fullsize
Yum yum, fresh off the farm!
View fullsize
Dad's enthusiastic, but you'd never know it.
View fullsize
Namwan is also not sure where she is, or why.
View fullsize
Sitting around chillaxin', while Top fixes some wiring in the background.
View fullsize
Another seafood meal -- this time, right on the ocean.
View fullsize
Som tum, served up fresh.
View fullsize
She's very focused on the calamari in front of her.
View fullsize
All smiles after the delicious meal.
View fullsize
Ladies' turn.
View fullsize
Did you know that there are dolphins off the coast of Chantaburi?
View fullsize
Next stop was a look-out point not far from the restaurant.
View fullsize
We did make it to a beach on this visit.
View fullsize
Looking back across the bay, toward the mainland.
View fullsize
Standing in the shade, the sane people they are.
View fullsize
Clearly the sensible thing to do is take a family portrait in the sun.
View fullsize
Marouy's had enough of this nonsense. He's ready to jump.
View fullsize
The Red Block Building in Chanthaburi was initially constructed in 1893 A.D. when the colonial French army invaded Chanthaburi and set up military headquarters here.
View fullsize
I guess this is an original French cannon.
View fullsize
The French used this aptly-dubbed "Chicken Poop Prison" to torture prisoners. The chickens lived on top, and pooped onto the poor people trapped below.
View fullsize
The smell remains today. In our heads, anyway.
View fullsize
Now onto the shrimp farm. He didn't have any shrimp in the ponds, at the time.
View fullsize
The Hot Dogs take another drink break. Too lazy to even get up.
View fullsize
The dogs are the center of attention.
View fullsize
Last stop: the home and shop of the same family.
View fullsize
This girl played with her cat as if it were a stuffed animal.
View fullsize
Dinner at yet another seafood place. We got there just in time for the beautiful sunset.
View fullsize
Nice clouds. Little did we know that a storm was rolling in.
View fullsize
Nice group shot, by a surprisingly skillful waiter.
View fullsize
Two sleepy boys, after an exhausting day on the road.
View fullsize
The next morning, Namwan is still tired from exhausting day before.
View fullsize
Mr. Lazy makes it very clear that he doesn't want another road trip today.
View fullsize
At Wat Pai Lom, the chickens are free-range.
View fullsize
There's a moat that runs around the premises.
View fullsize
Picturesque greens.
View fullsize
In the middle of the Wat is a giant, modern stupa covered in sparkly glass tiles.
View fullsize
The doors were suitably ornate.
View fullsize
Everyone admiring the glass tiles.
View fullsize
Too hot to stand around for too long!
View fullsize
Another group shot, this time in the shade.
View fullsize
Next local experience: Wat Buppharam, the first temple in Trad.
View fullsize
There was an odd-looking wooden buddha image...
View fullsize
Which was motorized, and would chant for you, upon inserting a 10-baht coin!
View fullsize
The Wat was built in 1648.
View fullsize
Inside one of the buildings was a very old reclining buddha.
View fullsize
My new doo. A true bowl cut.
View fullsize
The giant wheels of a giant ox cart.
View fullsize
Lazy, sleepy Marouy has to sleep on the toes of a person.
View fullsize
Final lunch in Trad: back at the same seafood place as the first night. Much nicer view this time, though.
View fullsize
The restaurant raises its own crabs in the natural canal that runs from the ocean into the province.
View fullsize
All smiles, but sad to be leaving.
View fullsize
Everyone digs in!
View fullsize
Dad, what are you up to?
View fullsize
One final family portrait.
